Agri-PV: Hand in hand for more climate resilience

Producing agricultural products and green electricity on one area – it's possible!

Agriphotovoltaic systems (Agri-PV) combine agriculture and solar power generation on the same area, offering numerous benefits for all parties involved.

Landowners benefit from secure rental income over more than 20 years, while farmers continue to generate agricultural income and can also establish a second financial mainstay by taking over maintenance of green areas.

Agri-PV is in our DNA

With over 30 years of experience in the field of renewable energies, we have a unique perspective among companies in agriphotovoltaics. We are pioneers in dual land use solutions, with a strong track record in Agri-PV and Floating-PV systems. As an internationally active project developer, we offer a comprehensive range of services for custom PV systems, from planning to operational management.

BayWa r.e. sets new standards for Agri-PV systems

Together with 16 representatives from the German agricultural, solar and research sectors, we have developed the first industry standards for agriphotovoltaics. These were adopted in May 2021 and published as DIN SPEC 91434 – 2021-05 – Beuth.de.

Our Agri-PV solutions: Overhead-PV and Interspace-PV

Each Agri-PV project is designed according to each site’s unique characteristics. Depending on your needs, we specialise in two applications of Agri-PV: overhead and interspace Agri-PV-systems.

Ground-level Agri-PV

Ground-level systems, also known as interspace PV systems, enable agricultural use between the rows of PV modules. At least 85% of the area remains in agricultural use. In addition to the rental income, a further source of income can be secured by taking over maintenance of the green areas.

Well suited for:

  1. Forage crops, e. g. clover or alfalfa grass

  2. Crops, e.g. low-growing cereals and potatoes

Overhead-PV

This solution makes it possible to combine livestock farming and energy production in the same area. Grazing animals such as sheep and cattle find shelter from the weather under the elevated PV modules, while the solar farm can also be used as a grazing area. Overhead-PV is also suitable for chickens.

Well suited for:

  1. Grazing animals (cattle and sheep)

  2. Chicken farming

Your benefits of Agri-PV systems

By combining agriculture and energy production on one site, we use the land more efficiently. Agri-PV also offers farmers further ecological and economic benefits.
