BayWa r.e. completes Malaysian solar farm

to overview

BayWa r.e. is celebrating the commercial completion of its first ever solar farm in Malaysia.

The solar farm, which covers a 20-acre area, is located within the campus of the Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) in the state of Perlis’ Royal Capital, Arau. Its completion marks the beginning of Malaysia’s large scale solar energy generation.

The solar farm, which generates a total of 5.2 MW DC, is now operational with power being sold to the utility Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).

Daniel Gäfke, Managing Director of BayWa r.e. Solar Pte Ltd, commented on completion of the solar farm: “This project marks a significant milestone for BayWa r.e. in Malaysia. Not only did we win this project in Malaysia’s first ever solar auction but it is now also one of the first projects to be generating renewable energy for the country.

It’s an exciting time for us in South East Asia. Last year, we launched a new solar distribution business in Thailand so that we could better service the growing installer market. And with this latest project completion, we are playing a significant role in helping Malaysia to achieve its renewable energy ambitions.”

BayWa r.e., has been working as part of a consortium called SBU Power Sdn Bhd with project partners UniMAP, and local renewable energy developer Sun Energy Ventures.

Todd Morath, Executive Director, Sun Energy Ventures commented. “Delivering renewable energy projects like this, is at the core of our purpose. We’re thrilled to see it generating clean renewable energy for Malaysia. It’s a shining example of what collaborative working can deliver through our relationship with BayWa r.e.”

Situated within UniMAP’s grounds, the solar farm will also educate future generations through a special test system that has been installed within the university that will allow students to undertake different types of training.

Dato’ Professor Dr Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal Vice Chancellor UniMAP commented. “BayWa r.e. has enabled us to take a great step forward in realising our renewable energy ambitions. This is a landmark investment opportunity for the university and provides an important introduction to large scale renewable energy projects to our students.”
